Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is a South African tertiary education institution with its main administration in the coastal city ofPort Elizabeth. A merging of three institutions formed NMMU in January 2005 but its history dates back to 1882 with the foundation of Port Elizabeth Art School. The University draws international students from all over the world. There are over 3000 international students and include students from the United States, France, China, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom and many other countries.

NMMU is a comprehensive university offering professional and vocational training. The University has six campuses - five in Port Elizabeth and one in George. The main campus is the South Campus.Students at NMMU can study towards diplomas and degrees up to and including doctoral level qualifications. A number of courses include workplace experience as part of the curriculum.

The University opened on 1 January 2005 as the result of a merger between the PE Technikon, the University of Port Elizabeth and the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University. This union of three very different institutions came about as a result of government’s countrywide restructuring of higher education – intended to deliver a more equitable and efficient system to meet the needs of South Africa in the 21st century.

NMMU brings together the best of both worlds - technikon and university education - and draws on more than a century of quality higher education, in a new kind of university that offers a wide range of academic, professional and technological programmes at varying entrance and exit levels.

NMMU offers students a wide choice of stimulating and market oriented courses, opening up a variety of career opportunities. Courses are offered in the Faculties of Arts, Business & Economic Sciences, Education, Engineering; the Built Environment & Information Technology, Health Sciences, Law and Science.

North-West University

 The North-West University is a newly merged institution from 1 January 2004 onwards with three campuses at Potchefstroom,Mahikeng and Vanderbijlpark, South Africa. The Potchefstroom Campus (founded in 1869) is the largest, and the head office of the University is situated at this location. With its merged status, the North-West University became one of the largest universities in South Africa and has 64 081 students (full-time and distance education).The universities that merged to form this institution are the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education and the University of North-West (formerly the University of Bophuthatswana). These two campuses form the main hubs of the university, with the Potchefstroom campus catering to Afrikaans speakers and the Mahikeng campus being broader in orientation.
